How to prepare for home health care

May 10, 2023

Introducing health care at home can be a big change for many families and individuals who are used to their life being a certain way.

It can be daunting to have a new person spend a lot of one-on-one time in your home, however a new caregiver or nurse should be a great and positive change for whoever needs them.

Adapting their care to suit your specific and individual needs, service providers like Acoup will have done everything to make the transition as smooth as possible.

However, if you are getting ready to introduce home care for either yourself or a loved one, there are some steps you can take to be prepared and organized.

Get your home organized

It might seem like a simple step, but organizing your home so it is easy for someone new to navigate can make a huge difference while you both are getting settled into the new routine.

Although you do not need to have a huge clear out or deep clean before your caregiver’s arrival, you should consider making sure everything you need and use is readily available, and that there are no obstructions or hazards.

The home should be easy to navigate, and items such as medications should be clearly labeled. This will mean that when the home care begins, your caregiver can quickly reach everything they need and focus their attention on looking after the individual.

You may think they would know that your medications are stored in the small kitchen cupboard for example, but no two homes are the same, and being organized in advance will make adjusting much quicker.

Communication

In advance of your home nursing or caregiving package beginning, you should let your loved ones or family know about the upcoming changes.

Keeping everyone informed will also make the transition far easier and allow those close to you to understand your new daily routine and schedule.

Having home care for many people will also make life and logistics easier, allowing them to have support and assistance both around the house and social activities outside of it.

If you are a family member and have organized home care for your loved one, it is also very important that you communicate with them about the upcoming changes in their life.,

They may be hesitant or resistant to accept home help, so allowing them to ask questions and understand all aspects of what is happening is essential.

Ask Questions

If you have questions about what else you might need to do to prepare for home nursing or caregiving, it is also a good idea to contact your agency and ask them.

They will know exactly what personalised plan has been created, and what if any changes or preparations need to be made in the home.
